Exploring, Discovering, Learning

I want to make the Past, both History and Prehistory, more exciting, relevant and 'hands-on'. It's a fun place with some great stories, I want to share these with everyone.I work with schools, museums, community groups, either at their place or outdoors in the Landscape.
I develop and deliver projects. I create resources. Exploring the Past and our shared heritage, bridging the divide and Discovering the links between these artefacts, sites or museum and Us. I try to put objects back in context, helping people Learn about the past. I use objects, both orginal and replica, costume, crafts and role play, in other words - Living History.

I'm a member of a small group of like-minded people - The Deja Crew

ps - I personally do not collect any data from this blog. However I know Google does, particularly through Google Analytics - please contact them if you want to know more.

...Romans at Kings Cross!

I've been digging out some images recently and since I haven't posted for almost a year, it seemed an obvious thing to do...

...post some images!

Yes it is Kings Cross Station!

Here we are, in Londinium, me and Nigel, our job, to help the Tyne Valley Community Rail Partnership persuade commuters that they would rather be in Hadrian's Wall Country!

Admire the view from Hadrian’s Wall in 360

A little while ago a photographer from the Telegraph asked me if I could stand still for a minute or two.

Well it wasn't easy but this little film was the result - Enjoy!

Discovery Visits with English Heritage

It's Easter again, Spring is here.  Over the Summer and Autumn Terms, I'm running Discovery Visits for English Heritage at Housesteads Roman Fort

MEET A REAL LIFE ROMAN SOLDIER (KS2-3): Discover what life was like for a Roman soldier stationed at Housesteads and meet Roman Veteran, Rufus Aelius Victor. Students will also be given the opportunity to ask Rufus questions, dress in costume, train as a recruit in an auxiliary unit, explore the site and handle both real and replica Roman artefacts. Duration: 1 1/2 Hours

For Housesteads please contact English Heritage first through their website or contact the Bookings Team.

I can also appear at any English Heritage site along Hadrian's Wall, as a member of their Approved Educational Provider scheme (AEP), so if your school or group is visiting Corbridge, Chesters or Birdoswald and you would like to meet 'Victor the Veteran' please get in touch.

Thanks,
Roy

...a Tale of the Frontier.

Tales of the Frontier logo

Tales of the Frontier is a research project by Durham University. Hadrian's Wall and the Frontiers of the Roman Empire World Heritage Site make up a huge linear monument moving through many different landscapes and communities as it crosses the region from coast to coast.
The aim is to discover how people view the momument today (and compare this to past ideas), to explore how it has influenced the communities and landscapes it passes through and to understand how the Wall came to be the prominent World Heritage Site it is today.
The website reports the research so far -

Late last year Iwas invited to join the consultations developing a new set of leaflets.  Rather than creating 'yet another walk' along the wall, the Booklet and 8 leaflets hope to inspire people to engage rather than pass through, providing locations to 'stand and stare'.  They are available on-line through the Tales of the Frontier website - Wall Stories; leaflets and booklet

Fugit Inreparabile Tempus....

...as Virgil said "it escapes, irretrevable time".  It certainly does, it's getting close to a year since the last post.

In that time I've run a Heritage Club, written a First World War Railway resource, made a video, worked with loads of new people and old friends and 'Victor the Veteran' is still recruiting along the length of Hadrain's Wall.

I will add posts about some of these over the next few weeks (honest!)

Got to rush, I'm off to the Head of Steam, Darlington for the launch of;

"Railway Workers in World War One"

I'll take Rufus and Railway Ron, so keep an eye on Twitter @RAeliusVictor and @HeadofSteamMus
all the best,
Roy

Recruitment and Reward - September 2013

-a selection of short diversions for adults and families...

...that's how the blurb described the two days I was involved in!
Slightly different venues, Vallum Farm on the 14th September and Walby Farm Park on Saturday 21st September.  Both are part of the Hadrian's Wall World Heriatge Site, the entrance to Vallum Farm being at Milecastle 18 and Walby Farm is between Milecastle 62, found in excavations in 1999, and milecastle 63.  There's not much to see, but if you try hard you can make out the impression left by the Vallum.

A small select team from The Deja Crew, Shamus the Storyteller, Muriel the Herbalist and Victor the Veteran, where there...
Not quite out usual backdrop, this was indoors at Walby.

Shamus in his Den.

But Muriel made it seem like a home from home...

As you might suspect,
it was a little different at the Farm Park...

There were still plenty of voluntarii wanting to sign up for 25 years in the Auxilary!
and finally, if you fancy a giggle - where did Walby get this image from?  It's almost as old as me!!

Where next...

Saturday 15th - Recruitment and Reward - Vallum Farm 11:00am to 4:00pm.  It will be nice to return to Vallum Farm and Milecastle 18.  I was there for the Heritage Open Days last year.  This time I'm with Shamus the Storyteller and Muriel the Herbalist.  There will be fun and activities for all

Lovely Lanercost

Things have been busy over the last fortnight - Discovery Visits at Housesteads, Family Man sessions in primary schools across Tyneside and Wearside and an evening session with Victor the Veteran at Once Brewed YHA for a group from St Helen's.  The weekend of 15th/16th June saw The Deja Crew at the Lanercost Experience Tea Rooms.  We set up a small Roman Forum,

as usual Victor the Veteran wasn't too far away...

I'm sure that's not as tidy as Prefect would like!

Shamus told stories

Nest spun thread and wove cloth
Muriel used her herbs to good effect

and Gaius Bellicus made pots

We talked to many interested folks, including a busload of Americans on a whistlestop tour of Hadrian's Wall, they found us so interesting that the coach driver had to rev the engine and toot the horn to get them onback on board!!

The next Deja Crew event is
Maryport - 15th to the 18th of August where we'll be at Senhouse Roman Museum and Roamin' about the Town of Maryport!
Hope to see you there.

The Deja Crew events

The Deja Crew are involved in the celebrations for the Hadrian's Wall National Trail - it's 10 years old!  Over the Bank Holiday weekend we were at Bowness-on-Solway, helping the local community with their event, we even got on the local ITV news, where I got the length of the Trail wrong, that's what happens when the TV turns up early and unexpectedly asks for an interview!
The weather was glorious, I was extolling the virtues of the Roman Army at the Wallsend Tea Rooms, Shamus was telling stories in the churchyard of St Michael's Parish Church and the rest of the Crew were in the Lindow Hall for making jewellery, clay plaques and weaving - wonderful.

Tales from Shamus
On Sunday were part of Silloth Green Day and the weather was still glorious!

Sulwyn and  Nest

Before the day started...

very much the veteran...

There'll be other dates as part of the Celebrations, I'll post them soon,

Roman Style Signalling at Segedunum

Evocatus - Victor the Veteran
As part of Segedunum's celebration of  Connecting Light Victor the Veteran demonstrated how the Roman passed messages along Hadrian's Wall - or at least that's what the publicity blurb at Segedunum stated!
The day was a little quiet, being the last weekend of the Summer Holidays, but we still had fun.
How we did it
There's a good book by David Wooliscroft (see below), which looks at signalling from an archaeologist's point of view and relates it to the remains on Hadrian's Wall.  However we needed something children could make work across the fort

The Flags are  dipped rather than raised

Using 2 sets of 3 flags, rather than the banks of 5 usually used in the reconstructions and by adapting a code Julius Arfricanus in the 3rd Century.  If all the flags are raised and the message sent by dipping a flag, it makes it easy to spot which flag is moving.

By changing the alphabet from the original Greek and dropping the 'J' and 'U' gives 24 letters.  All the receivers need to do is to count the number of time a flag dips and use the grid to note the letter.  With practice we could send a letter every few seconds.  The flags are just large enough to be obvious over 100m or so, but to be visible over longer distances, they would have to be much bigger and further apart.

Some of the 'Connecting Light' balloons were being stored in the bathhouse - that led to a couple of surreal encounters...

I am NOT a NUMBER!!!!!

I am Rufus Aelius Victor and I will have my revenge...

Enough said.....

Connecting Light at Segedunum

Segedunum, 30 August 2012, just about Dusk
As it was just before dark today...

looks very surreal.  Tomorrow I'll be signalling using flags along the balloons - I hope.  If all goes to plan I'll be using a simplified code first described by Julius Africanus in the third century.

Some of my flags.

If the code and flags work, I'll write it up and let you know how we did it.

Connecting Light

This weekend I'll be involved in something very different -

Connecting Light - London 2012 Festival

Connecting Light is a major new digital art installation along the line of the Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site, one of the most significant structures of the Roman Empire.
The Connecting Light installation will be live between 8pm and 11pm on Friday 31 August and Saturday 1 September.
Connecting Light is an opportunity to re-imagine Hadrian’s Wall as a metaphor for borders and boundaries, and as a structure that inspires communication rather than division and confrontation, stimulating creative conversations.
You are able to influence the outcomes of Connecting Light through direct engagement with the installation
Messages sent across the Wall will be made visible online and through handheld mobile devices during the day and throughout the installation ‘performances’, and at a number of visitor sites across the Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site.
The installation will be visible in the evening between dusk until 11pm.
Influence the artwork by sending a message, or to discover more visit www.connectinglight.info

LOOK FIERCE!, he said, SNARL!!!!!

here are a few of the images from the recent photo shoot at Housesteads

Think  'Clash of the Titans' he said...

...and the photographer said "just run towards me, it'll be fine..."

I am Sparticus....
No! I am Sparticus,
I am Sparticus...

I really need to work on that snarl, no wonder the Vikings were so feared
Thanks go to the photographer Andrew Heptinstall and to Gardiner Richardson for the images.  I'm still waiting for the one of us doing press-ups!

A Roman, a Viking and a Medieval Knight all got together one day at Housesteads......

...sounds like the start of one of those old jokes, but this motley crew was joined by a Gladiator for a photo shoot to support English Heritage's summer events programme.

Did the Romans do the Olympics?

The Olympic Torch made a little detour from the pre-planned route today for a quick visit to Housesteads Roman Fort.  Deftly finding a gap in the rain, Charlotte Proud from Gateshead, nimbly dashed past Rufus Aelius Victor who just happened to be on guard duty near the north wall - well there you go!
